Crisis: The Watergate crisis will simulate the defining scandal of an era, which all started with the burglary and bugging of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) at the Watergate complex for political gain. In our simulation, starting in September 1972, the Watergate burglars in the process of being convicted and jailed, have revealed themselves in open court to be working for the government, which has only to be traced all the way back to Nixon himself if anyone manages to dig hard and deep enough. Sparked by a single impeachable offence, this crisis will unfold through the battle between justice and its obstruction, truth and obscuring it, and those holding on to power and those trying to obtain it. The 3 cabinets: Press—the presenters of news to the American people and electorate, Executive—Nixon’s Whitehouse and crooks, and Legislative—American congresspeople with the power to pass articles of impeachment, will each be working with and against each-other in a wonderful entanglement of politics, espionage, manipulation, and danger, to sway the ever-so-important public opinion, and gain or maintain power.

Cynthia is a 2nd year English Language and Linguistics student at King's College London. She is American, Belgian, and an honorary Finn. Perhaps not surprisingly, she also can speak many languages. Besides linguistics and MUN, she is passionate about activism and climate change.
Therefore, perhaps also unsurprisingly, she is determined to be engaged with American politics. That is how she ended up with her crisis topic; she believes in the benefit of running a modern crisis to teach delegates real life applicable skills relevant to a modern world, and also thought it pertinent to learn from the last great corruption and impeachment scandal -Watergate- to better understand the world around us today. She looks forward to getting to run this simulation together, and visiting Exeter for the first time. |
